Thinking Back to Our First Summer Together | Our Family

One of my favorite pictures ever - on our second date at the battlefield June 2, 2011

Luke and I started dating on the first day of June, 2011. That summer is so sweet to look back on and think about. One of my favorite, funny memories is how much Sheetz food we ate that summer. I remember spending a lot of time together at church and at the battlefield, and somewhere in between, we would drive to Sheetz and order food from those little computer screens.

That summer Luke made us a bunch of bonfires. Another one of his favorite things to do was for the two of us to get in his car and drive around. I had the job of randomly choosing 'left' or 'right' whenever we reached the end of whatever road we were driving on. I'm thinking back on that now and trying to figure out in my head where we ended up. It looked so unfamiliar but we were probably only 10 minutes from the places we lived and worked. They were just roads and houses we never would have found otherwise.

Yesterday Luke, Bekah, and I ran to Target to pick up some things for our new car and our apartment. The weather was so warm and sunny. There was definitely a glow about the afternoon. Being in our new little car together felt like that summer in 2011 when it felt like heaven just to have time with Luke. We listened to a CD that will always make me think of our first summer together. We held hands and smiled and talked about what a sweet feeling all of it was.

After Target, we hung out in the parking lot just long enough to put in our new floor mats and for Bekah to squeeze her pumpkin banana puree on the seat. But we had just purchased automotive wipes so we were prepared. :) Luke made a call to a nearby restaurant to order two entrees for pick up. It was the same meal we couldn't resist ordering when we went out to eat together that first summer.

The sunlight just got prettier and more dreamy as the evening went on for the three of us. Being with Luke in that little car, with the warm sunlight, with one of our favorite CDs playing felt nostalgic and beautiful.

We pulled into campus and, with our sweet baby sleeping in her carseat, Luke suggested we stay outside and eat in the car with the windows down. More time together in that little car. More time being nostalgic. More time thinking about what a treat it is to be with Luke.

  1. "Sheetz MTO" = lyfe. :) I love you and our history, girl. You're my fave forever. And I love your writing. And your heart. Come home so I can kiss ya! (Really though, I have to read my life away for school - but I can definitely fit in a kiss or two).

P.S. Let's make a bonfire today, tomorrow, summer.

  3. Love love love this! Currently making "aww" noises in my head while my students do seat work.

I definitely have to agree with Luke's comment - your heart is beautiful.

p.s. we never got Indian/Thai food, and that makes me sad. Let's make that happen, please.

  4. There's something so magical about romance in the summertime! I love reliving early days if dating M as well. I was just thinking about the first day trip we took together :) we did a lot of exploring in those early days too! :)

  5. Aw. What a sweet thing those first adventures together are. Now adventures look a little different with babies (understatement), but still just as special... and it will be the coolest thing to one day be able to reminisce about family adventures with our kids. :) I hope you're doing well, Rebecca! I think of you often! Looks like you are rocking this momma of two thing. :)

    1. Haha yes an understatement indeed, but they are definitely still special - and I agree, I love reminiscing about family adventures with my own parents and siblings!! :) I'm doing great on most days; good on others. Bad days are few and far between thank God. I don't think I can say I am rocking this but I am definitely coping, and better yet, I am loving both of these girls !! :)

  8. Haha! I think Sheetz MTO has permanently been replaced by Wawa... MTO?... in this Philly season. :) Not complaining. They have cheesesteaks.

You're the coolest, babe. Love ya tons.

  9. Thank you for letting me post to your blog. We headed down to the dealer with our car and began looking at an SUV but I couldn't help but fall in love with this hatchback vehicle. The dealer gave us an incredible deal for our vehicle and we wound up paying half what we thought we were going to for the new SUV.
